How I Met Your Father – Worth the Watch?

In the words of one Ted Mosby, if HIMYF is gonna happen, “it’s gonna happen”. Where do you stand on the new iteration of How I Met Your Father? It’s set to be a spinoff/sequel, with Hilary Duff taking the Bob Saget/Josh Radnor role.

Haaaaaave you met Hilary Duff? The Younger and Lizzie McGuire star is set to produce and headline How I Met Your Father, the long-gestating How I Met Your Mother spinoff, which has received a straight-to-series order at Hulu.

If you don’t know the sordid history of How I Met Your Father, I definitely encourage you to take a look. I covered it in a HIMYF article, but you really should read the leaked script. It’s…not great.himyd-script-p1

But that was years ago, and this is now, and this is written by the writers of This is Us. So I feel good about it!

“Created and written by Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger, How I Met Your Father is set in the near future, with Sophie (Duff) telling her son the story of how she met his father, much like Josh Radnor (and Bob Saget’s) Ted Mosby did in the original series. The story starts in 2021 as where Sophie and her close-knit group of friends are in the midst of figuring out who they are, what they want out of life and how to fall in love in the age of dating apps and limitless options.”

It’s no secret that I have my issues with Carter, Bays, and the way How I Met Your Mother finally played out. Yes, I am still salty about the dumb ending. Yes, I think it was lazy writing and a disservice to the fans. But I’m still willing to give the new show a go!

The main reason for my interest in this show (aside from my fervent love for HIMYM, even despite our contentious relationship) is that Bays and Carter will be executive producing, but they aren’t the main writers. After having watched This is Us, I am more than confident that these writers can do it justice.

I’m very curious about how others are feeling about the show, and if you plan to watch it or not. Let me know and we can discuss like it’s 2009!

Dear Corina, I used to love reading your HIMYM blogposts back in the days, and immediately came back here to see if you had posted a review of the HIMYF series already. (No pressure though!) Have been rewatching HIMYM with my partner myself these last pandemic years, because I feel it is a reference point he should know about but season 9 is a struggle (and much of 8 too tbh)…
Thank you for all your insightful blogposts on the series throughout the years!

Thank you so much for your kind comment! I just published a recap of the first episode (written on my IPad, so not formatted as pretty as it could be, but oh well). I’m still debating how much I want to watch, but I’m going to give it a few episodes. Thank you again for coming back here to read what I’ve written!!
