man and woman holding hands

You Never Me

You Never Me

You offered me these promises
Of lust, and love, and luck
I expected hits and misses
I guess I just got starstruck
You polished all your attributes
To a blinding, lying glare
They said “he does just as he suits”
And blamed ME for being there
YOU displayed mere grains of truth
Single drops of hourglass sand
And like so many points, they’re moot
At least from where I stand
We all worshipped at your altar
We all created our own lies
But still, we trip and falter
Each disappointment a surprise
In this lonely land of lots
To know who someone is
Take a look at what he’s not
Then see what surfaces
