Nothing Gold Can Stay

Nothing Gold Can Stay

Nature’s first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf’s a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay.

-Robert Frost

With thanks to the talented and oh-so charming Marion/MayanRocks for the image that I pilfered :) This is the first “grownup” (aka not Shel Silverstein) poem that I fell in love with. I wasn’t sure what image to put with it, and then I remembered this cheerful – yet poignant – creation that I spotted on Marion’s blog. It perfectly captures the glow of nature’s gold – and in saying hello, we realize that we will soon be saying goodbye. Or perhaps I’m reading too much into it? Either way, I think the message of this poem is not so much to seize the day as to simply appreciate it.
